Wednesday Jun 21, 2023
There are many wonderful things about living in rural America, there are also many challenges.
In this episode Adam talks to Mindy Jorgensen about the difficulty in providing behavioral health services in this context. From being spread out across a vast geography to limited cell phone and internet services to a stigma about the need for such care.
According to the National Institutes of Health, "there is a significant lack of access to specialty mental health care in rural areas in the USA. It is estimated that as many as 65% of nonmetropolitan counties do not have psychiatrists, and over 60% of rural Americans live in designated mental health provider shortage areas."

Health & healthcare can be complex
The One in Five was birthed out of a desire to explain health and healthcare related topics to the layman, with an additional focus on the challenges of providing care in rural America.
80% of Americans live in 3% of America's landmass. The other 20% live in 97% (rural and frontier). In these regions it can be difficult to provide access to quality healthcare.
Is it possible to bring care to people rather than expecting them to come to us? We believe this podcast is one of many ways we can!
